How to Replace an audi replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stays shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shutdown.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is going bad and requires replacement. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, GM's version this component is an option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous issues in your vehicle. This is the same across the audi key copy 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.
